Full Description

War memorial constructed in 1919, to the designs of Sir Ninian Comper. Its is built of ashlar stone, in the form of a medieval churchyard cross rising from a square base, and sitting on three octagonal steps. It is inscribed with the words ' To the Men of Alford who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-19'. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} Designed by John Ninian Comper, the Alford war memorial is an 11ft (3m) tall tapering octagonal column. It is made of Clipsham stone and topped with an ornate cross. It sits on a rectangular base and three diagonal steps. Its west side holds a carved laurel wreath and inscriptions. It was dedicated in 1919 in order to commemorate those who died in the First World War. A further attempt to honour the fallen of Alford was made in 1920, with the opening of the Alford and District War Memorial Hospital (see MLI126962). {3}
