Full Description
St Catherine's Methodist Church and adjoining Sunday School are first depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. {1}
The Sunday School (later the Church Hall), was built first in 1881, with the Methodist Church being added in 1887. Both were designed by Charles Bell. The tower and spire are a later (1908) addition by Withers & Meredith of London. The church and hall are constructed in gault/grey brick, with red brick and stone dressings and slate roofs in the Early English style. The church has lancet windows and there is a ritually northwest steeple, not completed until 1908. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}{3}
Sometime after 1920, the Sunday School is converted into a church hall. The church itself served as a place of nonconformist worship well into the 20th century. However, by 1989, both the church and the church hall had become redundant and were being used as commercial warehouses. The building was undergoing restoration work in May 2005. {4}
