Full Description

PRN 70416 It would appear that a Baptist Chapel has been on this plot since the mid to late 18th century. Evidence for this comes from a series of volumes dating to 1767 to 1910, including registers, financial notes and records, minutes of church meetings and sundry records. {1}. Similarly, there are a number of documents for an associated Sunday School 1857-96 including a Sunday School admission book, journals, library register and numerical register. {2} Another document suggests Mint Lane Particular Baptist Chapel was erected c.1816 and that it was a separate building, except its connexion with the schools which adjoin it. It was used exclusively as a place of worship with a congregation of up to 300. {3} A Baptist Chapel is depicted on the Padley Map of 1842 and subsequent maps of 1851 and 1868. {4} {5} {6} The present building was erected in 1870 and this building is depicted on the Padley and Thropp map of 1883. The map shows the building prior to the creation of Mint Street (which linked Mint Lane to Newland). {7} The building appears to have functioned as a Baptist Chapel until at least the 1970s. {8} The Baptist Chapel and Sunday School buildings probably became redundant in the 1980s. The chapel is now an estate agents, with the Sunday School a shop. {9} The present building was erected as the 'The Particular Baptist Chapel', in 1870 by Drury and Mortimer. It has a Gault/Grey brick front with arched window and some plate tracery, but on the whole rather Italian Romanesque or Norman. Generally a very plain building, complete with a southwest tower with a pavilion roof on it. {10} Just around the corner from the chapel is the former Sunday School, built in 1897 by W. Mortimer and Son, in an Arts and Crafts version of latest Flanders Gothic. {11} The former Sunday School and attached boundary walls are classified as a Listed Buillding. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {12}
