A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks on the Maltby le Marsh to Manby replacement water main. Evidence was uncovered for Roman ditches, gully and a pit. Finds recovered were low status, local domestic pottery from the mid 2nd to 4th centuries and animal bone. There was the burnt area of a hearth, although it couldn't be determined whether this was a regular hearth location, or a one off fire. This was interpreted as a field system associated with a nearby settlement. Small amounts of hammerscale were recovered from the soil sample which may indicate iron smithing in the area. {1} {2}
