Full Description

PRN 55173 Trial trenching was undertaken on land at Wickenby due to the high amount of finds being turned up by metal detectorists. During the course of the excavation ditches, gullies and pits were uncovered dated from the 1st to 4th century, implying continued occupation across this period. There were also some sherds of late Iron Age pottery which may imply use of the site before the Roman period. The ditches were regarded to be part of a field system relating to a nearby building which may have been a wooden structure as no stone was recovered from the evaluation, but roof tile and box tile were both recovered. There was also a large amount of household waste including 235 fragments of animal bones and oyster shells. Geophysical survey also revealed features related to this site. {1} {2} A variety of metal finds were uncovered by metal detector on the site these include a gold coin, 2 silver coins, strap loops, brooches and an ox-head spout all dating to the late Iron Age. There are to date over 180 Romano-British bronze coins of which the majority date to the 3rd and 4th centuries. There are 51 brooches which are concentrated in the 1st to 2nd centuries. These include Dolphin brooches, Trumpet brooches and Hod Hill brooches. There are many finds from domestic use including cosmetic grinders, nail cleaners, hairpins and locks. There are also finds associated with miltiary use, including an apron mount, a plate from a belt, a strap fitting and a harness strap-union link. There was also a bronze buckle with outward facing horse-heads, a Germanic style of buckle. {1} A complex of ditches, enclosures, pits, trackways and ring ditches were identified during geophysical survey. Trial trenching confirmed that these features are part of the Iron Age to Romano-British settlement. The alignment of the features suggest at least two phases of activity - late Iron Age-early Romano British, which includes possible round houses and a linear boundary, and a later Romano-British phase consisting mainly of networks of rectangular enclosures. No evidence of industrial activity was encountered. Pottery from the late Iron Age and Romano-British periods was recovered along with roof tile. {3}{4}{5}
