A walkover survey was conducted at the proposed extension to Red Barn Quarry, Castle Bytham prior to extraction. An iron slag scatter was observed. {1}
A geophysical survey was undertaken on the proposed extension of Red Barn Quarry, Castle Bytham prior to planning determination. Evidence was recovered supporting the suggestion of an iron working site in the east of the proposed extension. There was even a suggestion of an enclosure on the same alignment as the iron working and therefore it may be associated with the iron working. {2}
An archaeological fieldwalking survey was undertaken on the proposed quarry extension area at Castle Bytham. Evidence for iron smelting was recovered from two areas on site. On the basis of the fieldwalking, it can be concluded that the potential for the area to contain remains associated with medieval or earlier ironworking is high, and the remains may be related to the Castle Bytham iron smelting and working ('fabrica ferri') mentioned in the Domesday Book.{3}
