Full Description

Earthwork mounds and enclosures have been noted on aerial photographs just off the beach at Saltfleetby St Clement. {1} Second World War defence site of uncertain type, consisting of three circular pits - possibly gun pits for a coastal or anti-aircraft battery, or searchlight positions. {2}{3} The remains of at least three circular earthwork enclosures can be clearly discerned in this location, on Google satellite imagery. It is thought that the site was likely to be the location of a former Second World War searchlight battery. It would have helped to illuminate incoming enemy aircraft, that would then be targetted by the anti-aircraft gun battery located to the south-east (see MLI125588). {4}
