Full Description

PRN 45806 Workhouse, now hospital, built in 1837-39 with later additions. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott for the Louth Poor Law Union. Constructed in brick with a welsh slate roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The workhouse had room for 300 paupers and cost about £6000 to build. In 1841 it had 132 inmates and 179 in 1851. {2}{3}{4} This is a substantial building and is prominent in the 'Louth Panorama' of 1844-47. It was originally a lone building on the town periphery due to the 'shame' associated with it, and its grounds were enclosed by high walls. It is now the County Hospital. {6}
