Full Description
An area of significant archaeological deposits were found during an archaeological evaluation. Limited archaeological excavation was undertaken on this area, involving the opening up of two 5m square trenches abutting the western edge of the evaluation trench. The most significant finds made during the evaluation were two clusters of vertical timbers, forming elements of four different structures, all of which are likely to have been components of fish weirs. A number of associated artefacts were recovered, including net sinkers and pottery. It is thought that these structures were constructed between the mid 10th and 14th centuries AD, and form structures that have close associations with a medieval fish weir examined at Colwick, Nottinghamshire. {1}{2}
This fishery is likely to be one of those belonging to Bardney Abbey, which are recorded as Goshilgarthe, Maydengarthe and Chaumbleingarthe. Maidengarthe is thought to lie at the junction of the Old River Witham and the Snakeholme Drain, about 650m to the north of this site, but the possibility that it actually lies further to the south cannot be discounted. {3}
