Full Description

The Priory is a picturesque gothic villa built in 1818 by Thomas Espin FSA, artist and amateur architect. Thomas Espin is buried in the Mausoleum in the grounds (PRN 45672). The plan of the house is essentially a series of intersecting cubes dressed up with gables, open work cresting and octagonal turrets. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4} The Priory was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey, resulting in an amendment to its List Entry Description. The Priory is a gothic villa built in part using salvaged materials from the former Town Hall and the ruins of the 12th century Louth Park Abbey. The Priory was run as a classical commercial boarding school shortly after its completion, from 1822 until 1955, when it was then used as a retirement home. It was converted in 1977 to be used as a hotel, and extensions were added to the east and west sides. The building is two-storey with an irregular but approximately rectangular plan. The principal elevations are in a picturesque, ornamental gothic style, with exposed areas revealing ashlared stone, and subsidiary side and rear elevations of brick, painted white overall. The roof is recovered in tiles. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {5}{6}
