Full Description

63332 C.W. Phillips recorded a round mound in Leadenham Park which measured 20 paces in diameter and four feet high, which is indicated on the 1824 OS map as a 'tumulus'. The mound was excavated in 1908 by H. St John Hope, the results of which were published in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, Vol XXIV, pp.282-86. No interments were found but a right-angled cross-trench had been cut into the original ground surface , and which contained limestone slabs. There were some signs of an encircling wall of stones around the edge. This evidence suggests that this was a post mill mound. {1}{2}{3} Copies of letters regarding the excavations were seen by F.T. Baker at Leadenham House in 1957. Fifteenth to sixteenth century pottery was recovered during the excavations. {4}
