Full Description

PRN 54978 Gradiometer survey was undertaken on land at South Cliff Farm, South Carlton. The survey identified two possible Romano-British rectilinear enclosures and associated field boundaries towards the north-western corner of the study area. It is possible that the features identified formed part of the estate connected to the villa site at Scampton, 1.5km to the north, or possibly to that at Burton, 2.5km south. {1} A programme of trial trenching was undertaken, with a trench being opened across a linear feature aligned north to south and defined one of the rectilinear enclosures. The trench revealed a ditch 1.90m wide and 0.65m deep with steep irregular sides and a flat base. The fills of this ditch contained Romano-British pottery. {2}{3}
