Full Description

PRN 54977 Gradiometer survey was undertaken on land at South Cliff Farm, South Carlton. An oval ring ditch, defined by the survey, was identified towards the southern part of the survey area. It measured 32m long and 28m across and showed no signs of an entrance {1} A programme of archaeological trial trenching was undertaken. Two trenches were excavated across the north and south arcs of the ring. The ditch measured 1.50m across and between 0.50 to 0.65m deep with moderately sloping sides and a slightly concave base. It had filled naturally with orange-brown sandy silt. Although the monument had been heavily ploughed a fragment of Collared Urn from the primary fill suggests the monument was probably constructed sometime between 2250 and 1750 BC. The limited dimensions of the ditch make it more likely that it was constructed as a disc or saucer barrow. The absence of internal features suggests the primary burial had not been placed in a rock-cut grave in the limestone bedrock. The barrow was located behind the brow of the hill and is unlikely to have been visible from the west, but would have been seen from the gentle dip slope to the east. {2}{3}
