Full Description

PRN 23915 Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching) along the proposed route of the A1073 relief road between Eye (near Peterborough) and Spalding. The evaluation identified 20th century dumped deposits, possibly the backfill of a dyke associated with the feature known as Green Bank. Because of the depth of the trench and noticeable instability, it was rapidly backfilled. Therefore the true nature of the feature was not determined {1} {2} Further excavation on this site was also inconclusive, and no evidence for a ditch large enough to have transported craft to the island at Crowland was identified wither within the deposits forming Green Bank or its surrounds. The deposits forming the bank appear insubstantial and may relate to the cleaning of the dyke rather than the creation of a bank.{4}{5}
