Full Description

PRN 23901 Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching) along the proposed route of the A1073 relief road between Eye (near Peterborough) and Spalding. The evaluation identified a broad and deep ditch which proved to be a post-medieval dyke. The dyke was later subjected to a bore-hole survey, which identified a sequence of alluvial deposits. The dyke was aligned east to west and was originally some 3m wide and 4m deep. The sandy deposits at at the base represent a time when water was able to flow freely along the channel. The overlying sequence of soft shelly silt and clay shows that the dyke silted-up, rather than being deliberately backfilled. There appeared to be an attempt to clear the ditch along the course of the dyke. The dyke then appears to have become overgrown by marsh vegetation forming a buried soil. This feature probably represents part of a more extensive drainage system than survives today, and probably dates to the post-medieval period {1} {2}
