Full Description
Trial trenching of the Former Anchor street works revealed evidence of a Roman fort and cemetery in this area (see PRNs 70021 and 70349), and also evidence of domestic or commercial occupation. A number of post holes and refuse pits were recorded on the site. A number of linear features also on the site are suggestive of land drainage. One hundred and fourteen brick and tile fragments were found including a single box flue tile, a complete Roman vessel was also recovered which may have been associated with a burial. A number of coins were also found, although in many cases these were redeposited. A relatively high occurrence of coins have been found elsewhere in this area, on sites where there appears to have been a degree of commercial activity. This activity will have involved the use and loss of a large number of coins, and the recovery of coins on this site may be indicative of commercial activity here also. A small quantity of Collywestern slate roof tiles, thought to date from the Roman period, were also found; their use implies a degree of affluence in the area, as the cost for slate would be higher than locally produced ceramic tiles. {1}{2}
A watching brief was undertaken during geotechnical investigations on land at Anchor Street, Lincoln. The watching brief recovered Romano-British pottery dating to between the 3rd to 5th century. The watching brief corroborated the findings made during earlier archaeological and geotechnical investigations, with proof of Romano-British deposits being found throughout the area. {3}{4}
A sub-circular clay lined structure thought to be a kiln or drying oven was found during trial trenching in February 2008, to the rear of 116 High Street, Lincoln. Pottery from the feature suggests that it was in use during the mid 3rd century. Numerous fragments of probable kiln lining were also found. Five similar kilns, also of 3rd century date, were found during recent work on the Anchor Street site. {5}{6}
