Full Description

PRN 45495 A programme of non-intrusive archaeological fieldwork, involving systematic field walking and rapid magnetic susceptibility survey, was carried out on the site of a proposed flood relief zone in the vicinity of the River Waring to the north of Horncastle. Fieldwalking recovered low densities of material dating from the Mesolithic to the early modern periods, with a relative concentration of artefacts in the northwest of the site. Fieldwalking produced a total of 28 Romano-British pottery sherds, with a concentration of 19 sherds in the southern part of Field 2. Predominantly Grey wares dating to 2nd to 3rd century, and a few possibly Late Iron Age or 1st century Romano-British types. There were no sherds dated to the later 4th century. Such a concentration of material may indicate the presence of a Romano-British site in the vicinity {1} {2}
