Full Description

PRN 23867 An archaeological watching brief and selected excavation was undertaken on a plot of land at Backgate, Cowbit. The watching brief and excavation identified a number of undated features throughout the development area. A number of natural or semi-natural features were found on site, including creeks and watercourses. Although no sequential chronological order could be deduced for the man-made features, they tended to fall into two broad physically defined groups: linear and sub-circular. The linear features, interpreted as ditches, appear to have formed field boundaries utilised for drainage, whilst the sub-circular features probably functioned as pits. These features may have had associations with adjacent dated features. In spite of the lack of dating, several of the features were truncated by post-medieval remains and therefore were no later than this date {1} {2}.
