Full Description

PRN 54868 An archaeological survey was undertaken on lands forming part of the Brocklesby Estate, comprising field observation and rapid fieldwalking (on a non-collecting basis) and a desk-top assessment. This was done to appraise the archaeological resource of the estate as part of a wider Heritage Landscape Management Plan. The survey identified a large circular enclosure earthwork, some 50m in diameter and marked by a 2m wide ditch. The feature cut through medieval ridge and furrow (PRN 54869) and was itself partially truncated by a quarry pit. The enclosure had no obvious function. One possibility is that it indicated the edge of a small, pre-existing covert, prior to the large scale planting of Cottager's Dale Wood. Similar circular coverts appear on the early Ordnance Survey plans of the park {1}
