Full Description

Cropmark remains, interpreted as possible prehistoric enclosures, trackways and field boundaries located to south of Harrington, have been identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2}{3} A linear magnetic anomalies matching the alignment of one of the previously identified linear features at the south-western end of the complex (TF 3638 7109) was recorded in June 2011, during magnetometry survey along selected parts of the proposed Covenham Water Treatment Works to Boston Transfer pipeline. This area was overlain by the distinct magnetic remains of medieval ridge and furrow (see PRN 49157). {4} A large quantity of prehistoric flint artefacts were recovered at the north-western end of the complex (TF 362 714) in October 2011, during subsequent field walking of the proposed water pipeline route. The assemblage comprised a mixture of early Neolithic to Bronze Age material, including 4 cores, 5 retouched tools, 18 flakes and 36 pieces of probable debitage. {5}{6} Much more extensive areas of linear features and enclosures to the west of Brinkhill were identified in October 2011, during expanded magnetometry surveys of the proposed Covenham Water Treatment Works to Boston Transfer pipeline. {7}
