Full Description

PRN 36488 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during development at Thorold's Charity Primary School, Marston. The watching brief monitored the excavation of foundation trenches for new classroom extensions to an existing, Grade II Listed Building (Ref 300.006). The investigation identified a number of gullies and ditches, which, due to a lack of artefactual material, remain undated. Also undated was a pit and an animal grave (cattle burial). Each of the gullies and ditches represent short lengths, as they do not appear in parallel foundation trenches. As such, they are unlikely to represent formal land division and may have served a very localised drainage function. The pit possibly served a refuse function, though did not contain artefactual material. The cattle burial, though undated, is likely to be post-medieval in date considering its accompaniment with lime to aid decomposition {1} {2}
