Full Description

PRN 70346 An archaeological watching brief monitored groundworks relating to the construction of an extension to the rear of the Positive Health (Lincolnshire) building at 25 Newland, Lincoln. The watching brief identified an undated stone-built structure, consisting of irregularly shaped limestone (up to c.300mm in size) in a light yellowish-brown clayey sand silt matrix, displaying a marked increase in density of stone over its southern extent. The southern edge of this spread was straight and well defined, indicative of a structural function - possibly as the foundation for a structure of indeterminate form and function. Alternatively, the spread could be part of a metalled surface or a dump deposit. Although no dating evidence was retrieved from the deposit, it was sealed and cut by later medieval features dating to the 13th to 16th century. Therefore, it is possible that the stone spread might be Roman in date {1} {2}
