Full Description

Cropmarks of enclosures, including ring ditches, to the north of Ashby Puerorum, identified from aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. They have been interpreted as being the remains of prehistoric settlement, including hut circles. They are overlain by the remains of a possible Roman villa (see PRN 45318). {1} The remains of a small pit, thought to be a component of the prehistoric settlement activity in this location, was excavated in March 2013, during trial trenching in advance of tree planting. Six small sherds of Bronze Age pottery were recovered from the fill of the pit. The sherds all appeared to be from the base of a single vessel, thought to be a locally produced jar or urn. Two heavily truncated ditches, possibly associated with the prehistoric settlement activity, were also recorded, although no dating evidence was recovered from either (see PRN 49249). {2}{3}
