Full Description

The National Mapping Programme identified a series of enclosures and boundaries on aerial photographs, which they tentatively interpreted as a Roman villa site. {1} A geophysical magnetometry survey undertaken between December 2016 and January 2017 recorded enclosure systems and probable building remains of Iron Age to Roman date which closely matched the NMP transcription. {2} Following the positve geophysical survey results, a scheme of trial trenching was enacted in March 2017. A total of eleven trenches were dug, with ten revealing prehistoric and Roman archaeology, including the settlement site previously identified in aerial photography and geophysical survey. Settlement activity appeared to be focused around trenches 4 and 5 where an enclosure, ditch, pits, and a timber beam slot were recorded. Activity in the other trenches appeared to relate to agricultural activity. Pottery recovered comprised 60 sherds and was predominently 1st to 2nd century greyware, with a small quantity of samian in keeping with regional averages. A quantity of possibly cremated bone was identified in an urn, with some of the material being animal bone and other pieces being unidentifiable. {3}{4} Open excavation in June and July 2018 centred around the focal point identified the same features as the trial trenching recorded the same features, with additional sherds of native tradition pottery also dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries. Further funerary evidence was also recorded with a possible cremation pit containing sheep/goat, cattle, and unidentifiable possibly human bone. {5}{6}
