Full Description
Earthworks of likely late medieval ridge and furrow were identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Further remains of ridge and furrow were identified in several of the fields to the immediate east of those previously identified, during a walkover survey, conducted to assess the impact of proposed construction of the Covenham Water Treatment Works to Boston Transfer pipeline. {2}
Traces of the ridge and furrow, including a previously unidentified area in the field to the north of Raithby Hill, were also recorded in this area in June 2011, during magnetometry survey along selected parts of the proposed Covenham Water Treatment Works to Boston Transfer pipeline. The remains were identified as a series of parallel linear magnetic anomalies, mostly aligned on a roughly north-east to south-west axis. {3}
Medieval pottery sherds were recovered in this location in October 2011, during subsequent field walking of the proposed water pipeline route. The assemblage comprised 13 sherds of medieval pottery in a variety of forms and fabrics, including fragments of Toynton ware and possibly late medieval Toynton ware. {4}{5}
Further traces of the ridge and furrow were identified in March 2012, during a thrid phase of magnetometry survey for the Covenham Water Treatment Works to Boston Transfer pipeline. This third phase looked at alternative routes for the pipeline to the west of Hundleby, and recorded these additional cultivation traces in the fields to the south of Raithby Hill. These remains were again identifed as parallel linear magnetic anomalies, this time aligned on a roughly east to west axis. {6}
