Full Description

Earthwork remains of the medieval settlement of Ranby were identified on aerial photographs, by the National Mapping Programme. {1} A number of broad, linear magnetic anomalies were revealed in April 2013, during a magnetometry survey, conducted along the proposed route of the new Stenigot to Benniworth Water Main. The anomalies were thought to represent former ditches of unknown date, and did not appear to be aligned with the current field pattern. {2} Several of the former ditches previously identified by the magnetometry survey were excavated in July 2013, during subsequent trial trenching along the proposed route of the new Stenigot to Benniworth water pipeline. A sherd of 11th or 12th century pottery was recovered from one of the ditch fills, and a further four sherds of the same fabric were recovered from the fill of a nearby pit. These features were thought to form part of the medieval settlement remains of Ranby, previously identified on aerial photographs. {3}{4}
