Full Description

PRN 23829 Probable salt production site dating to the 12th century as attested by a possible saltern mound and, indirectly, salt making waste and by-products (in the form of brick, plano-convex brick, tile and fired daub and clay) was found within an associated rubbish pit. The exact location of this industry is unknown, yet it is assumed to be in the near vicinity. {1} {2} Excavation at the site failed to find any definite evidence of salt making. Fired clay with a coloured crust which could represent salt production residues was recovered. This was the only possibly salt related material recovered from the site. However, environmental sampling revealed a predominantly dry grassland environment with only fresh water sources present and therefore unsuitable for salt production. It seems likely that the fired clay is related to some other, non salt related, activity. {3}{4}
