Full Description

PRN 23828 A number of archaeological features were identified during excavation on land at Holbeach Road, Spalding, in the form of boundary ditches and pits dating to between the 12th and 16th century. Some of the features dating to the 12th century show indirect evidence for salt production in the area; particularly a rubbish pit containing burnt clay, tile and brick from a possible saltern trough or structure. {1} {2} Following the initial investigations in 2003, a full excavation was carried out on part of the site. This revealed no definate evidence for salt making, and environmental samples showed a dry grassland environment unsuitable for salt manufacture. The excavation did reveal evidence for large-scale crop processing from the 12th century and also for iron working from the 13th century-early post medieval period, both of which played an important part in the local economy. {3}{4}
