Full Description

PRN 44709 [This record includes information from PRN 47920 which has been deleted.] This tiny tower mill is a rare survival indeed, the last of its type in the county and one of only a handful to remain. It was built in the mid or late 19th century to drain a claypit at the brickworks nearby and had ceased to work by 1923. It has stood derelict for at least 60 years but still retains virtually all its gear. The tower is very short, being only some 12 feet high. The cap frame is simple and probably never had a roof. The iron windshaft has a crank connected directly to the up and down upright shaft, which is more correctly a 'connecting rod'. How the mill operated is now impossible to establish but as it is a fixed structure must have involved extensive temporary leats and culverts as the pit covers a large area. The mill appears to be safe from demolition and will probably remain in its present state for many years, unless any restoration is embarked upon, that is. {1} A small wind pump was erected during the nineteenth century to drain water from the clay workings. Presumably the water table is relatively high in this location and the brick pit would have been prone to flooding.{2} A red brick, 19th century wind pump. It has a small tapering brick tower, with a doorway at the ground floor level. Inside is a small water pump originally driven by the former sails. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3} A visit by members of the Industrial Archaeology Group of the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology in 2013 failed to find any trace of this wind pump. {4}
