43899 A brick kiln (see PRN 47759) has been recorded in Sutton on Sea within a brickworks. It has been published by Martin Hammond in Industrial Archaeology Review, Vol 1, No 2, 1977, page 178. It was also listed by Keith Falconer in a survey of brickworks, 1981, produced by the CBA Industrial Archaeology Panel (copy with RCHME). {1} There is a brick works shown on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map on the corner of Alford Road and Brickyard Lane. {2} Some of the buildings, including the wind pump (PRN 44709), are still standing although disused. {3} The kiln (PRN 47759) at Sutton on Sea brickworks was constructed in the mid 19th century and was in use until just after 1930. The shape and size of the kiln on the 1906 OS map suggests that there were firing sheds here too. A small wind pump (PRN 44709) was erected during the nineteenth century to drain water from the clay workings. Presumably the water table is relatively high in this location and the brick pit would have been prone to flooding. {4}
