Full Description
PRN 13653
During archaeological trial trenching carried out between the 4 and 10 March 2003, a series of middle Anglo-Saxon ditches were found in Trenches 2,3,4 and 5. The ditches are concentrated towards the north-eastern half of the site indicating a focus of activity. What form the activity took is uncertain, although some of the shallow ditches and gullies could represent beam trenches for rectangular or square structures. It is also likely that some of the larger ditches could represent land parcelling and drainage. {1}{2}
In Trench 2 there was a north-east to south-west aligned ditch with an uneven base. Finds from the single fill of this ditch included a rim sherd of southern Maxey ware. Adjoining this ditch from the north-east was another aligned south-east to north-west. In Trench 3 there was a north to south aligned ditch which was smooth sided and had a narrow base. The fills of the ditch contained late 8th to early 10th century early fine-shelled ware. Sealing this ditch was a thick layer of brownish-red sandy clay, which in turn was cut by another (later) ditch. The later ditch was aligned north-west to south-east, and contained sherds of northern Maxey and early fine-shelled ware. Cutting across the western corner of Trench 4 was a north-west to south-east aligned, steep sided ditch with an irregular base. The fill of this ditch contained late 7th to mid 9th century pottery types, including southern Maxey ware, Ipswich ware as well as local middle Anglo-Saxon fabrics. Another north-east to south-west aligned ditch, having a stepped south-western edge, was found to contain a large amount of broken mussel shell and southern Maxey ware pottery. Three north-east to south-west aligned ditches less than 0.5m apart were recorded in the central part of Trench 5. A sherd of local middle Anglo-Saxon ware was recovered from one of the ditches. {1}{2}
