Full Description

PRN 54619 During trial trenching in 2003, three pits were recorded. One of the pits contained pottery, animal bone and possible loomweight fragments, indicating domestic refuse. One of the other pits contained an assemblage more indicative of horn-working and tanning; horn cores and fragments of cattle skull were found, along with a bone awl made from a horse metatarsal (toe bone), which may have been used in leatherworking. Cattle phalanges (toe bone) may indicate possible tanning at the site, as the feet were often left attached to hides. Two sherds of pottery from this context came from the same vessel and had had the interior leached of shell, suggesting the vessel had contained an acid liquid, possibly another part of the tanning process.{1}{2}
