Full Description

Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} More extensive remains of the ridge and furrow were recorded in May 2008, during a magnetometry survey conducted on land to the south of Belton Lane, Manthorpe. The remains were well preserved and extended further to the south and west than those previously identified by the NMP. {2} Subsequent trial trenching, conducted in September 2009, confirmed the presence of extensive and well preserved remains of medieval ridge and furrow across the site. The majority of the furrows were aligned on a roughly north to south axis, although a small number at the north-east corner of the site were aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis, indicating a division in the open field system here. Although no stratigraphically secure finds were recovered during the investigation, a redeposited sherd of medieval pottery was found in the topsoil, towards the esatern edge of the site. This sherd was a handle fragment of reduced green glazed ware, dating to the 14th century. {3}{4}
