Full Description

PRN 44564 During trial trenching in 2002 centred on TF3413 5708, several finds were recovered which suggested to the excavator the presence of a possible monastery or other religious complex in the field immediately to the east. Fragments of ceramic fish smokers parallel those found at Short Ferry, Fiskerton, which was thought to be the site of one of the Stainfield Priory fisheries. Fragments of Tudor brick and Flemish floor tiles were also found, suggesting that a high-status building possibly lies in the field immediately to the east of the trial trenching. This building may have been in the ownership of a monastic house, an idea which is supported by the cessation of activity on this site in the mid-sixteenth century, a date which coincides with the Dissolution.{1}{2} There is no documentary evidence for a medieval monastery in Stickney, the Grange of Revesby Abbey is further south and east of this site. The site is on Hall Lane and so it is not unreasonable to postulate a high status complex in this area which may or may not have been associated with a religious house. {3} Geophysical survey and trial trenching was carried out at the site in 2004. The results of this work confirmed the presence of a high-status medieval site, as indicated by previous investigations. Pits containing domestic waste were discovered as well as possible structures. The geophysical survey revealed a trackway running east-west, which excavation dated to the 13th century. A large number of finds were recovered, indicating that the site was first settled in the late Saxon period and remained in use until the mid 16th century. {4}{5}
