Full Description
PRN 54811
During trial trenching in 2003, late medieval to post medieval features were identified. A limestone rubble wall foundation containing a fragment of reused rotary quernstone was thought to define a structure. A gully may represent a foundation trench for an internal wooden wall. A spread of limestone fragments respected the wall foundation. Two east/west aligned ditches were also recorded. The lack of medieval pottery may suggest an agricultural function for the features, probably as part of Westhall Manor.{1}{2}
Medieval features consisting of ditches and gullies were encountered during an excavation. These are probably of agricultural origin and may have aided drainage. A gully interpreted as structural in a previous excavation was revealed to be only a gully. However, roofing tiles of 12th-14th century date were found indicating the presence of a building in the area at this time. These features may be related to Westhall Manor, which was presumably situated nearby. Post-medieval ditches, including re-cuttings of medieval features, were also encountered. {3}{4}
