Full Description
PRN 36134
During a watching brief in 2002, Roman features were recorded. Two ditches were recorded, aligned north-east/south-west and north-west/south-east. Pottery from one of the ditches dated from circa 140 to 200 AD. Although a relationship could not be established, it is thought that the ditches are contemporary and form part of a gridded field system. A pit containing pottery dated 140 to 200 AD was thought to be for refuse disposal. The pottery assemblage was of a moderate to higher status domestic nature. {1}{2}
During archaeological excavation at Willoughby School in June 2004 to March 2005 by Archaeological Project Services, Roman post holes, pits and a gully dating from the second century and a well, gullies, pits, ditches and post holes dating from the third century were found. A linear cemetery which contained eight inhumations dated to the third century was also revealed. {3}{4}
