Full Description

Romano-British pottery was recovered during a watching brief on land to the rear of Sycamore House. {1}{2} Romano-British finds including animal bone fragments, 42 sherds of pottery and a complete copper alloy brooch were recovered in 2001, during trial trenching, conducted prior to the construction of a new housing development at 8 Church Lane, South Witham. {3}{4} Remains of Roman activity were identified in April 2002, during an excavation at 8 Church Lane, South WItham. These remains included a single pit, and one, possibly three gullies or ditches, some of which had also been identified during a previous evaluation on the site. The recovery of a sherd of Iron Age scored ware, and a beehive quernstone suggests that the Roman activity may have originated in the Iron Age. 154 sherds of Roman pottery were recovered, predominantly of 1st and early 2nd century date (comprising greyware, Nene Valley colour-coated ware, white ware, calcite-gritted ware and sandy ware), and were indicative of rubbish deposits close to settlement. A flat-type quernstone of early Roman date was also recovered. There was a little pottery recovered which suggested a revival of occupation in the fourth century. Tile and animal bone were also recovered. {5}{6}
