Full Description
PRN 54796
During trial trenching in 1998, part of a feature of indeterminate nature was recorded, containing a sherd of fifth to seventh century pottery. Two further Early Saxon potsherds were also recovered.{1}{2}
During residential development on land off Bishop Norton Road a series of largely undated features were identified. These comprised two ditches and a total of sixteen pits, concentrated to the north western (Plots 1-4) and central (Plots 7,8,12) parts of the site. One of the pits was surrounded by stakeholes. One pit contained two sherds of fifth to eighth century pottery and two sherds of late tenth to late twelfth century pottery. One of the other pits contained a single sherd of fifth to eighth century pottery, while a further pit contained a single sherd of a Saxo-Norman jar (late eleventh to twelfth century). There was clearly occupation on the site in the early Saxon and Saxo-Norman periods, however, there is no evidence to suggests the nature of this occupation. {3}{4}
