During a watching brief beneath the currently listed building remains of an early building was recorded. A series of features relating to the building were found, consisting of pits, a hearth floor and walls. The hearth floor was constructed from heat affected tiles dating to the 13th to 14th centuries. The hearth contained a large assemblage of pottery from the 14th and 15th centuries, suggesting that during this period the hearth west out of use. Walls of roughly coursed limestone blocks, some standing to four courses high, and pits were also identified. Pottery dating from the 12th -13th centuries onwards were recovered from site. Earlier sherds recovered were deemed to be residual. {1}{2}
