Full Description

PRN 35877 During investigations on land adjacent to Hall Farm, pottery and tile wasters of mid-twelfth to mid-fourteenth century date were recovered, although no kilns were identified. These wasters may relate to documentary evidence from the late thirteenth century when two potters were fined for digging in the area of King Street at Kates Bridge, circa 1.3km to the north-west. This evidence for local pottery production is in a ceramic type known as 'Bourne A' ware, previously considered to be a product of kilns in Bourne, a known pottery production centre. This new evidence relocates a production centre to the vicinity of Baston village.{1} It is suggested that the kilns may be located near to Kates Bridge {1}, although this seems unlikely as the wasters were found well over a kilometre from Kates Bridge and wasters are generally found in close proximity to kiln sites.{2}
