Full Description

PRN 35807 Excavations revealed a late Roman inhumation cemetery. The burials lay predominantly between two large Roman ditches, which may possibly be boundary ditches, which partly enclose the villa. Four of the twenty burials were just found beyond this boundary and a further two burials were found just outside the main focus of the cemetery. There appears to be no fixed orientation to the burials, and they are mainly in an extended position. One of the inhumations was placed in a crouched position, which may suggest an earlier date for this particular burial. Only two pottery vessels were found in the cemetery and most burials were found without any grave goods. Iron nails recovered from the graves suggest that they were buried in coffins.
