Monument record MLI83465 - Possible Bronze Age or Iron Age earthwork banks, Middle Field/Red Inn Field
Summary
Undated linear earthwork banks, Middle Field/Red Inn Field. These have been interpreted as either features related to a Bronze Age or early Iron Age multiple ditch system or medieval plough headlands. The former interpretation is the most likely.

A site visit in 1996 noted four broad ridges, thought to be the remnants of ridge and furrow, running approximately north/south through the fields.{1}
Aerial photograph interpretation in 1997 noted that the banks ran almost continuously for several kilometres. Bank 1 appears to have functioned as a plough headland, but ridge and furrow clearly passes across Bank 3. The extreme length of the banks would also be unusual for plough headlands. In addition, linear cropmarks of apparent cut features sometimes pass straight across the banks with no obvious weakening of the surface marks, which would be difficult to explain if the banks were simply accretive medieval headlands. An alternative interpretation, therefore, is that the banks are much more ancient features, possibly Bronze Age or early Iron Age and possibly related to multiple ditch systems.{2}
During evaluation work in 1997, the same four low parallel equidistant banks were recorded on a north-east/south-west alignment. It was suggested that a fifth bank (outside the survey area) may represent the agger of the Roman road.{3}{4}
Cropmarks interpreted as prehistoric enclosures and trackways, perhaps indicating settlement have been identified by the NMP. {5}
