Full Description

St Michael and All Angels' Church is located in South Hykeham. The unbuttressed west tower has 13th to 14th century lower parts and Decorated bell openings. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1869. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} Parish church dating from the 13th century, which was restored and added to by M. Drury and Martimer in 1859. The church is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and features a slate ridge roof with eastern coped gable with finial. The building is comprised of a west tower, three-bay nave, south porch and eastern apse. The tower is mostly 13th century with two lancets in the lower stages. The bell chamber has a two-light opening with geometric tracery on each face. The stone octagonal spire has four lucarnes. The north front has four buttresses and a single lancet window to the west, along with two 19th century, 2-light windows with geometric tracery. The eastern semi-circular apse is unbuttressed, with a corbel table and three lancets. The south front has a porch with slate ridge roof and stone coped gable with finial cross and splayed buttresses. Also on the southern front is a moulded pointed opening. There are two interesting 19th century windows and 19th century internal fittings. Evidence for the earlier church building on the site of the current building was recovered in the form of limestone rubble and roof tile fragments. {9}{10}
