Full Description

PRN 54787 During trial trenching in 1998, structural remains of a broadly late Saxon date were recorded. A series of north/south aligned ditches and gullies in Trench 1 were thought to represent the remains of two sill-beamed or stave-built structures. A cobbled surface was thought to represent a yard. Eight postholes in Trench 3, seven of which were arranged in a C-shape, were thought to be the end of a rectangular building. All the possible structural features lay on a north/south alignment, suggesting an element of planning in the layout of the site. It is possible that the remains represent a late Saxon predecessor to the Prebendal manor of Westhall. See also PRN 52143.{1}{2} During trial trenching in 2003 at TF0083 7973, a pit and north/south aligned gully of late Saxon date were recorded. Significant quantities of cereal remains indicated cereal processing activity during the late Saxon period.{3}{4} A late Saxon ditch was discovered in Area 2 (c.TF 0078 7975) during a watching brief at Healthlinc House. The ditch was on a similar alignment to those found in earlier investigations nearby. {5}{6} Late Saxon deposits including a well, pits, ditches and gullies were uncovered during an excavation. It is suggested that some of the later features may be associated with the Domesday prebendal manor of West Hall, although none were suggestive of actual habitation. A ditch along the southern part of the site appeared to define the area of yards and building remains to the south (see above). {7}{8}
