Full Description

During excavations at the school, a limestone wall constructed in the 19th century, possible predating the 1855 school, was rebuilt. It probably served as the eastern boundary for the school. The excavation revealed the remains of a toilet block and cistern; this block was split by sex, with the larger part of the block falling within the boys' side of the boundary, though later the girls' side was extended. The toilets were eventually demolished about the time of the Second World War. {1}{2} 19th century school building. Single storey T-plan building of coursed limestone with ashlar dressings, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Two lateral stacks. {3} White's 1856 Trade Directory notes that a Church school was 'lately' built in the parish. The 1872 edition records that there was a National schoolmistress in the parish, a Miss Jane Stokoe. {4}{5} The school is shown in the same plan form on both the 1888 and 1905 OS maps of the village. {6}{7}
