Full Description
The Sessions House was built in 1805 by William Hayward of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof with a rear wall stack. The building is of two storeys with five bays, and the symmetrical front has end bays defined by giant pilasters with three blank windows between them. The north and south sides have regular fenestration. The interior has a cantilevered stone winder staircase; the courtroom has panelled benches and a semi-circular dock; the gallery is on iron posts with lamp holders; and there is a splayed enclosure to the magistrates' seats, with an enriched pediment topped with a figure of Justice. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
During a watching brief in 1997, several features connected to the prison and later occupation of the site were recorded. A diesel tank and associated brick base (left in situ) were noted during enabling works. An east/west limestone wall was recorded protruding from the section of the hole excavated for removal of the diesel tank. A brick wall in the south-east corner of the trench was thought to be a continuation of a wall noted during the evauation. A brick-built well was found to be capped by a millstone, thought to be of post medieval or later date and constructed of Millstone Grit from the Pennines. {2}{3}{4}
