Full Description

A theatre is known to have been built somewhere in Drury Lane in 1732, although it was quickly superseded by the Theatre Royal in Clasketgate dating from 1764, the same site where the present Theatre Royal still stands. A watching brief conducted on the site in 2002 revealed a brick barrel vault for a cellar. Although it cannot definitely be attributed to the theatre, barrel vaulting would not be out of place in an 18th century building. Several sherds of post-medieval pottery were recovered, dating from the 15th to 18th century. {1}{2}
