Full Description

62474 New Farm or New Homestead Farm is an excellent example of a planned farmyard of about 1870 in red brick with blue dressings and slate roofs. Built after the general adoption of threshing machines, it has a mixing shed rather than a barn, where the corn could be processed in a highly orgainsed fashion. A belt drive can be seen protruding from the shed to take power from a portable steam engine to drive a cake cutting machine or threshing machine. This tall shed, facing north, protects the crew yard from cold winds. It has four planked doors with timber lintels and to each side window openings, and a loft door to the grain store above. Behind the mixing shed are two parallel ranges of loose boxes and stables, forming a 'U' plan, with passageways through to the crewyard within. This is partly covered over with cast iron columns supporting a timber boarded roof. There is no mention of New Farm in White's Directory of 1856, but in a 1926 Directory it is mentioned as being farmed with Manor Farm. {1}
