Full Description

Dobson's Mill is one of the best preserved of the County's mills. It was built in 1813 by Oxley of Alford. It is shown on an Estate map of 1819 as having four sails, although it may have originally have had five, as it does now. It is still in working order. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3} Dobson's Mill is thought to have been built in 1813, however there is map evidence to suggest a mill on this spot in 1810. {4} The documentary sources give a confused picture of when the mill was built. Three different building dates are quoted; 1813, 1833 and 1844, plus a date of 1870 for a major refit. The only original source is a Monson estate survey which shows a tower mill on the site in 1810 with four sails. The mill now has five sails. A construction date of a little before 1810 would tie in with a rebuild in 1844 especially as the mill was described as 'newly built' in 1855, when there is documentary evidence for a millwright and owner. The mill may well have become five sailed at this time. {5} A Conservation Plan was produced for the building in June 2004. The plan included a summary of the various documentary sources, charting the origin and development of the site. {6}
