Full Description

PRN 44438 St Peter's church was rebuilt in 1839, but reused some components of the previous church, namely the probably late 13th century north arcade. Rebuilding is thought to have been the work of W A Nicholson and G R Willoughby, and the church is a sister church to Haugham. The rebuilding of both was paid for by the Reverend Mr Chaplin. St Peter's is done in the Gothic style with what Pevsner calls 'all the gimmicks', i.e., the characteristic Gothic motifs. The chancel was restored in 1883 by C H Fowler. The font is Decorated and octagonal.{1} St Peter's is built of rendered brick with some green sandstone rubble, and the lead roofs are hidden behind parapets or battlements. The west tower is of three stages with a clock on the north side. The chancel has a polygonal east end and is battlemented with pinnacles and an east finial. Internally, the north arcade is of three bays. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.{2} Stained glass in this church consists of eleven roundels, ten of which are Netherlandish, the eleventh being German. They are dated to the 15th century and late 16th to early 17th century.{3}
